A Guide to Choosing the Right Wood Shavings for Your Needs

Wood shavings are more than a by product of the wood working process. They serve numerous practical purposes across other industries, such as construction and agriculture.

Whether you own livestock and are searching for bedding options for your animals, or a gardener looking for natural mulch, choosing the right type of wood shavings can make a huge difference. With many options available, it can be hard to determine what is right for you. Here are six things to consider when choosing wood shavings for your needs:

Wood type
Before selecting, consider the type of wood and what the shavings will be used for. If you intend to use wood shavings for bedding, consider the size of your animals. Some wood shavings, such as cedar, have been shown to cause death in small animals.  Cedar is also not recommended for use as mulch as it can be potentially harmful to plants.

Flake size
The size of wood shavings can affect comfort and functionality. A smaller flake size is better for odour control and absorbency. They are also more cost effective. On the flip side, larger flake sizes are better for cushioning and comfort. Depending on its intended use, you may consider selecting small or large wood shavings. You could also consider a mixture to get the benefit of both sizes.

Dust level
Dust is a known irritant that can lead to respiratory issues in animals. Using dust-free wood shavings help to improve air-quality, prevent allergies, and positively impact respiratory health. Be sure to check whether wood shavings are dust-free, especially in cases where it will be used for animals or pets.

Aroma
Some wood shavings have a high aroma profile which acts as an insect repellant. However, the aroma may also irritate the respiratory system of some animals. While the repellant qualities may be attractive for use in gardens, it could be harmful if used near animals.

Absorbency
One attractive property of wood shavings is its high moisture absorbency. Pine wood shavings is a well-known option for its moisture-wicking properties. On the other hand, cedar may not be as effective in keeping the environment dry. This should be carefully considered if wood shavings will be used in animal living quarters as poor absorbency could result in high ammonia levels and odours.

Quality and processing
Yet another important aspect to consider is the quality of wood shavings. Poor quality and poorly processed shavings may contain excess moisture and dust particles that could possibly lead to mold and respiratory issues. Look for high-quality, kiln-dried, dust screened wood shavings as they provide the best for your animals and your farm.
